Address: Tabian Market, Qingshan Village
The renovation of the Ta Bian Market has carefully preserved the three essential functions — fresh produce market, public toilet, and recycling station — within a limited budget, revitalizing this long‑vacant inactive site into an all‑day, freely shared space for the local villagers. The design balances safety, functionality, and emotional resonance, allowing the place to truly integrate into villagers’ daily lives and become a warm neighborhood hub.
Throughout the renovation, Jiushe YZ Architecture has centered on villagers’ needs, realizing the design concept with delicate craftsmanship. Semi‑high curved walls and ramps skillfully resolve level differences on the site, shielding pedestrians from traffic and noise to create a safe barrier while quietly providing a warm sense of shelter. The roof uses raw bamboo familiar to villagers, paired with a steel structure, and softened by a harmonious color palette to reduce industrial harshness. The low‑slung eaves create an intimate, embracing atmosphere, achieving both visual beauty and local adaptability.
The functional design is thoughtfully crafted to meet flexible and social needs. Movable vendor tables blend seamlessly into the public space when not in use, and the central stepped area naturally forms a potential performance and viewing zone. Benches beside low walls offer ample space for neighbors to interact, accommodating casual conversations between acquaintances and gentle connections among strangers alike. The market operates on a rent‑free model, sustained by income from events held by village‑based organizations. Villagers take the initiative in daily maintenance, and collective refurbishment ceremonies deepen their emotional connection to the space.
Innovative material application breaks through the limitations of raw bamboo in public architecture. Used as grouting formwork and protective components, raw bamboo is combined with steel cables and concrete to form a typhoon‑resistant structure. After boiling and drying to remove internal nutrients, its service life is effectively extended, granting raw bamboo unique value in contemporary construction. The overall design strikes an exquisite balance between function, cost, experience, and local identity, making the space a vital carrier of rural vitality and neighborhood warmth.
